The Best Leather Photo Albums

By Alex Morgan · Updated · How we research

Graphic Image Large Bound Album is our first pick. Choose it for loose prints you want to arrange by hand, with room for captions. Its fixed pages need photo corners or mounts. If your pictures are still digital, compare the printed-book options below before ordering. Listed material: full-grain. Listed price: $215 at Over The Moon.

Our recommendations are based on makers’ specifications, materials, prices and customer feedback where available.

We may earn a commission when you buy through links on this page, at no extra cost to you. How we make money

Leather album listings cover blank books for mounting prints, pocket albums and books printed from digital files. Start with the page format you need, then compare the cover material. A listing that says only “leather” needs a closer look.

Pioneer is a familiar US budget album brand, and its sewn BookBound albums hold 100, 200 or 300 4x6 photos in pockets that take horizontal or vertical prints. An archival supplier, Gaylord, lists the 300-photo version as acid-free and lignin-free.

About $9 to $18 at Adorama, and about $29 for the 300-photo version at Gaylord.
Drawbacks

What these leather labels mean
Why we picked it
You can add compatible refill pages as your print collection grows. Per Over The Moon’s listing, this album ships with 18 pages holding 108 4x6 prints, and refill sleeves come in 4x6, 5x7 and 8.5x11. The pages are described as archival-quality polypropylene.
Who it’s for
Families with a lot of prints, or anyone who wants to keep adding photos for years.
Leather type
Genuine pebble grain leather, per the retailer.
Price
About $170 for the large. The Medium 4-Ring has been around $130, though prices vary by retailer.
Drawbacks
The large Beechwood color was sold out at one retailer when we checked. Refills are an extra cost.

Cheaper, bigger, not leather: The RECUTMS 600-photo album (about $20 to $28) holds far more, but Walmart’s specs list the cover as faux leather/PU, even though the copy says “high-grade leather.”

Splurge picks

For higher-budget options, Smythson’s Panama albums are made in England in crossgrain calf leather (about $595 to $850), and the Anya Hindmarch Bespoke Marylebone Album (about $840) is full-grain calf that can be embossed with names, dates, drawings or handwriting.

How we chose

We favored listings that identify the cover material and explain how the pages work. Our research method describes how we use those sources. For more on materials, see genuine vs. bonded vs. faux leather, and for page types, read how to choose a photo album.

Buying for a particular occasion? The wedding guide separates printed books from albums you fill yourself. The baby guide covers first-year photos and notes, while the third-anniversary guide includes frames and journals as well as albums.
